Inspiring Visit from Paralympic Archer Jodie Grinham

Greenfields Independent Day & Boarding School recently had the privilege of welcoming Paralympic Silver Medal-winning archer, Jodie Grinham, to the school. Jodie, an athlete with Sports For Champions UK, spent the afternoon inspiring both Primary and Senior School students with her incredible story and achievements.

Promoting Healthy and Active Lifestyles

Jodie’s visit was part of Sports For Champions UK’s initiative to promote healthier, more active lifestyles and impart essential life skills to children. These visits are not only motivational but also serve as a fundraiser for the schools. The sponsorship initiative helps schools raise money, with 60% of the funds going towards new equipment or activities and 40% supporting the athletes themselves.

A Story of Dedication and Perseverance

During her visit, Jodie shared her journey of overcoming obstacles to pursue her passion for archery. Despite being told she would never be able to do archery due to her disability, Jodie’s determination, along with her father’s dedication, led to the development of a customized bow. Her father’s support was instrumental in her training and success in para-sports. Jodie spoke with pride about her family’s unwavering support, emphasising that they are her greatest achievement.

Hands-On Experience and Inspirational Q&A

The students had the unique opportunity to watch a film of Jodie in action and even handle her World Championship and Paralympic medals. They learned about the fascinating design of Paralympic medals, which contain balls and bells to help visually impaired athletes identify the medals by sound—bronze being the softest and gold the loudest.

Jodie also engaged the Primary students in some exercises as part of their fundraising efforts. Both Primary and Senior students participated in a Q&A session, where they asked Jodie about her experiences and what it takes to be a competing athlete.

Celebrating Top Fundraisers

A special mention goes to Brady from Year 5, who raised the most funds and achieved Gold status, with his sister Kelsey also being a top fundraiser. Their efforts contributed significantly to the school’s fundraising goals.

A Day to Remember

Jodie’s visit left a lasting impact on the students, showing them that with dedication and support, it is possible to achieve great things despite any obstacles. The students learned valuable lessons about perseverance, the importance of family support, and the potential within everyone to succeed.

Overall, it was a fantastic and memorable day for Greenfields School, filled with inspiration, learning, and a deeper appreciation for the spirit of the Paralympic Games.
