Preschool & Reception

Foundation Stage at Greenfields

At Greenfields, our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision offers a nurturing and stimulating environment where each shild is supported to flourish as a unique individual. Our Preschool and Reception programmes are designed to build strong foundations across the seven key areas of learning outlined in the EYFS Framework:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Preschool

Children may join our Preschool from the age of three, beginning their educational journey in a supportive, child-led setting. Our skilled staff focus on the three prime areas of learning – communication and language, physical development, and personal, social, and emotional development. These are fostered through meaningful relationships, imaginative play, and hands on experiences.

Our approach ensures that every child progresses at their own pace. Learning is continually observed and documented, with progress shared regularly with parents. Through stories, songs, rhymes, and role play, children begin to develop their vocabulary, recognise colours and shapes, and explore their surroundings in a fun and engaging way.

We are accepting children from 2 years old and up.

Montessori Methods

We incorporate Montessori materials to enrich learning and support self-directed exploration. With a high teacher-to-child ratio, each child benefits from daily individual attention. Whether a child is ready to move ahead or needs extra support, our team is there to ensure they keep progressing confidently.

As children approach age four, they may transition into a more advanced nursery class, where they begin to explore literacy, writing, numeracy, fine motor skills, and global awareness through creative projects and structured play.

Laying Strong Foundations

We believe that a solid grounding in the basics is essential. Our highly effective phonics programme helps many children begin reading at an early age. Teachers ensure new concepts are introduced clearly and at an appropriate pace, using real-world examples, images, and materials to support understanding.

Reception

In Reception, learning becomes slightly more structured while still being playful and creative. Lessons include thematic projects, weekly topics, arts and crafts, role play, and more. These build on the foundational skills children have already developed, particularly in literacy, writing, and mathematics.

By the end of Reception, most children achieve the Early Learning Goals set out in the EYFS framework and are well-prepared for the transition to Year 1. Teachers ensure lessons are well-placed, hands-on, and supported by regular assessment to confirm full understanding. New vocabulary is introduced with visual and experimental examples to reinforce comprehension.
