Infants
The Infants consists of Year 1 and Year 2. It is in these classes that the children build on the firm foundations laid down in the Reception class. It is from Year 1 that formal education begins and it is based upon Greenfields’s curriculum, the National Curriculum and that of Cambridge. The curriculum is used in such a way as to best fit the individual students and their needs. This level of individual care continues through to Advanced Level Studies in the Sixth Form.
In these years, we are very careful in making sure that the children understand all the words that are being used and they are encouraged to ask what something means if they do not understand. Teachers avoid going on to another step before the children have understood the current one and they ensure that the children are given examples of the things that they are being taught.

Children benefit from having more one-to-one attention in the Greenfields setting. Assessment is continuous so a child can be challenged and move ahead or be assisted to stay on target.
It is in Infants that reading and writing really start to take off and the children move rapidly through a series of carefully graded books and other material designed to enhance and stretch their skills. They address spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation, reading and writing, presentation, speaking, and listening. They are given many opportunities to write and take pride in presenting a neat piece of work. Maths is taught traditionally with emphasis on knowing and understanding basic arithmetic.
The Infants Science Curriculum is topic-based and involves many practical aspects, which are not only fun but educational.
Other subjects are introduced in these classes and incorporated into the timetable as topics of study.
The children enjoy sports lessons twice a week, whether outside on the tennis courts, football pitch or inside in our gymnasium.

Schedule
The school day begins at 9 am and finishes at 3 pm. There are extracurricular activities from 3 pm to 4 pm daily.
Extra-Curricular
The extracurricular activities are from 3 pm to 4 pm daily. There are also some activities during lunchtime. These activities change every half term and are charged as an additional cost.
Juniors
The Junior School consists of Years 3, 4, 5, and 6. The teachers are friendly, caring, and passionate about educating each child and helping them fulfill their true potential. As in the Infant School, education is based upon Greenfields’s curriculum, the National Curriculum, and that of Cambridge. The curriculum is used in such a way as to best fit the individual students and their needs. This level of individual care continues through to Advanced Level Studies in the Sixth Form.
Reading
In this age of television and computer games, Greenfields is aware of the importance of vocabulary building and reading. We have an excellent reading programme which starts in the Infants, continues throughout Juniors and into the Lower Seniors. Ever wider reading is constantly encouraged.
Writing
The children learn how to write stories, poems, instructions, letters, reports, etc. They study and analyse the writings of others to help stimulate their creative writing. Handwriting is taught with the aim of each student acquiring a neat, legible, cursive style through continuous practice in the Junior years, and students also complete a Grammar and Communication Course which provides a wonderful foundation for all later education.
Mathematics
The Maths curriculum is supplemented with an in-house maths scheme, which comprises individual booklets and a series of class games and activities for each year. The intention is to instil in children a lasting enjoyment of maths and problem-solving.
Science
This subject is taught in projects. The first steps are an introduction to simple concepts such as weather, the human body and simple machines. In the next class, children study more of the actual biological and physical environments such as plant life and sound. In the older Junior classes, the students begin simple experiments and observations related to everyday life and the world around them.
Sport
The children enjoy sports lessons twice a week, whether outside on the tennis courts, football pitch or inside in our gymnasium.
Additional Information
Additional subjects such as Geography, History, Art, and ICT all form part of the Year 3-6 timetables. In the Junior classes, Science, Math, Art, Sport, and ICT are sometimes taught by specialist teachers. During break times, the children get to make the most of the beautiful setting, as the playground is located in the Ashdown Forest. This year a brand new outdoor decking has been built in the forest. This provides an inspirational place for the children to learn, play and use their imagination.
