Personal Development
Personal Development
At Greenfields, we believe that the school should greatly help each child become a valuable, responsible member of society. Personal growth is a vital part of our formative years and we want to do everything we can to help prepare students for adulthood. The school and the parents are encouraged to work together to ensure that the individual child is not only academically achieving but also succeeding socially and emotionally.
Nursery & Reception
Joining school is a milestone for almost every child and is where social and academic education comes together in the classroom to assist a child to develop into a socially mature individual with skills for life. Children can enrol in the nursery from the age of 3 years, and have other children with them. Here they learn communication with others, share, play together and begin to learn how to resolve differences between themselves.
Their physical development is also addressed in, for instance, outdoor and indoor activities, washing hands, healthy eating, using small tools for hand-eye coordination, and dressing. They also take their first steps in literacy by learning phonics; mathematics by understanding numbers and quantity, and understanding the wider world through visits and visitors. They begin to develop self-expression in the arts.
The educational process continues in the reception class with a little more emphasis on the three “R’s”. These are reading, writing, and arithmetic, in preparation for their entry into school in Year 1.
Play is an important experience for children at this stage of their development. Together with active learning, creativity, and the ability to think, positively and critically. Teachers and assistants are aware of the three barriers to study when they teach and encourage children to understand that sometimes they may not understand and should say so. This is an important part of the development of a child’s learning in the classroom and in life. It is the foundation for the learning and use of the Study Technology, which in time will create an independent student with a skill for life.
Infants & Juniors
At Greenfields Infant and Junior School, we provide access to a high-quality education with a broad and balanced curriculum. It meets National Curriculum standards, prioritises personal growth and also provides excellent pastoral care that prepares students for the challenges and expectations of the modern world.
We achieve this by ensuring our students strive for excellent academic achievement, meet challenges and develop a love of learning. The vibrant curriculum and the application of the Study Technology (which teaches children how to learn and apply) support our children in becoming ready for Senior School and life.
Additionally, in the Infants and Juniors, we seek to support the personal development of all students by providing each with respect for British values and the development of positive personality traits which are integral to our ethos. Regular whole school assemblies, learning buddies, and The Way to Happiness lessons are a vital part of the curriculum. Hands-on activities, workshops, and visits from guests at the end of terms are an incentive for our students to try their hardest and develop a moral compass.
Through the Way to Happiness lessons, the children are encouraged to be proud of their own identity and respectful and tolerant of those around them. Every child is supported in becoming the best they can be, cherishing their relationships, being industrious, and learning how to care for themselves and their environment.
We are committed to creating a happy and active environment where all members of the school and the wider community are respected and valued. We support and encourage each other to be inspired to learn. We seek to equip all our pupils with the right tools to become independent learners in the future.
Senior School
House Teams
The Senior Students are allocated a house team when they enrol at Greenfields. The three houses are Romans, Trojans and Spartans. During the school year, the students are awarded points for various activities such as sporting matches, academic achievements, volunteering, assisting a teacher and more. The students have to work as a team and at the end of the school year, the winning team is awarded the house cup and a reward for their hard work. This encourages a sense of community and teamwork.
Careers
PVBA (Personal Values, Beliefs and Attitudes)
In Senior School, there is a lesson every week which covers a range of topics from different religions, world events, politics, drug education, sex education, human rights, and more. This is a great opportunity for the students to expand their knowledge of the world and to engage in conversations about those things that might otherwise not be discussed freely. It is during this time that the students also learn about the principles in The Way to Happiness, which is a non-religious moral code, designed for people to read and use to live happily with others.
Student Consultant
In the Senior School, the Student Consultant deals sensitively and expertly with student behavioural issues and oversees the moral, social and cultural development of the students. She is on hand to assist and support the students with any non-academic issues that they may have.
