Seniors

Lower Senior

The Lower Seniors consist of Years 7, 8 and 9. In these first three years of Senior School, we aim to give every student a rounded education in a wide range of subjects and to open their eyes to the possibilities that lie ahead of them in the world at large.

As in the Infant and Junior School, education is based upon Greenfields’s curriculum, the National Curriculum and that of Cambridge. We assess each student regularly to determine their progress and to ensure that they are succeeding in all subjects. Tailor-made programmes can be made to suit each student.  If a student is advancing quickly, then they can be challenged with more advanced work and if they need extra support, then they can receive the assistance that they need to resolve any problems and move forward.

We continue the process of teaching students how to learn from the Junior School into Lower Seniors with Study Technology with additional courses. Students then have more tools to overcome barriers that they may come across when studying and enable them to fully understand the information that they have learnt so that they can use it.

In Lower Seniors

All students have their class tutor who is responsible for the overall care, education, and parent liaison.  Students register with their class tutor every morning and afternoon. Here the students have a chance to discuss anything with their tutor that they have their attention on. Subjects taught include Maths, English Language, English Literature, Physics, ICT (Computers), Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Art, Drama, Music, Sport, and Spanish.  The Lower Seniors aim to give every individual enough of an overview of subjects for an informed choice to be made when it comes to deciding what will be studied for examinations in Years 10 and 11, and possible career choices.

It is in Year 9 that students select the subjects they wish to pursue in their GCSEs. Students who are in an English as a Second Language Programme currently can choose all subjects that have a * beside them, if they have graduated from the programme, they can choose any subject. These subjects include:

  • Art & Design *
  • Biology
  • Business studies
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Drama
  • English as a First Language
  • English as a Second Language *
  • English Literature
  • Film studies
  • Food & Nutrition *
  • Geography
  • History
  • Physics
  • ICT *
  • Mathematics *
  • Music *
  • Photography *
  • Spanish *
  • Physical Education *

Other languages may also be taken as a GCSE exam if a student has an efficient standard of fluency in that language already and wishes to sit the examination. In addition to their chosen subjects, students continue to participate in Study Technology courses, further gaining more advanced study tools needed to achieve the confidence and abilities to progress in their area of study.  This develops independence in students allowing them to be confident and motivated in their self-studies throughout their school curriculum and into their future.

Here at Greenfields we reccommend that the student take at least seven GCSE’s and definately no less than five. Maths and English are compulsory and whilst it is advised to take a Science, it is not mandatory.

Upper Senior

It is in Year 10 where students, having chosen their GCSE subjects are given individual class timetables. After registration students will go to the next lesson on their timetable.

The Upper senior years cover a GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) qualification covering Years 10 and 11.  These are some of the most important years as external examinations are taken through a range of UK exam boards.  Students cover the content needed for that subject and complete mock examinations during Years 10 and 11 in preparation for what is expected in their final examinations. They also complete extensive revision in the months leading up to exams. Study Technology continues to be applied throughout the Senior years.

Schedule

The school day commences at 8:50 am in register with the class tutor and ends at 4:05 pm.  This allows for all subjects to be covered within a range of lesson times as well as provides study room time for students to complete homework to further their studies and revise.Â
