EAL Programmes

English as An Additional Language

Long Term - A Year or More:

At Greenfields we have a very comprehensive English as an Additional Language Programme for students aged 11-17 years, of every nationality and any level of English. When a student first arrives at the school we assess their level of English and from there we can determine the programme that they will need in order to join the mainstream school. Most students join the EAL class first for their English lessons. During this time, they focus intensively on learning and improving their English. They will also take part in some other lessons which do not involve too much written English. This will include Maths, Art, Sport, Drama, Music, and Information Technology with their year group.

If their understanding of spoken English is good but they need to improve their English grammar, they will still study the renowned Cambridge Global English intensively but also join their year group for all other lessons on the curriculum towards taking their examinations. The best age to send your child for English as an Additional Language is between the ages of 11-14 years, this being Years 7 through to 9 in the UK.

During their time in the EAL class, they will also get the opportunity to experience England. We host excursions to popular cities such as London and visiting historical sites, museums, and more. Those that are 11 years old and above, can also board in our on-site boarding house.

Short Term - Six Month Programme

We also offer a fully inclusive short-term programme for students aged 11-17 years. Our teachers are highly skilled in teaching all levels, from beginners to advanced. We offer a six–month programme (based on passport allowance), which for many countries does not require a full student visa. Students can come on their passports or a visitor visa with a formal acceptance letter from the school.

We use the Cambridge Curriculum which includes English as an additional language. The programme aims to take a student from:

  • – No English to KET/A2 exam and obtaining their KET certificate
  • – KET/A2 to PET/B1 exam and obtaining their PET certificate*

*KET is obtainable for all. PET is only for students with KET/A2 level or the equivalent on admission.

Whilst on the programme all EAL students will be integrated with their school year group and attend Information Technology (IT), Art, Drama, Sports and Music in addition to their English classes. This helps them to practise their English in everyday situations and make many new friends.

Boarding Students

We accept both Day and Boarding students on the six -month programme.

Students boarding whilst attending the six-month programme stay in our boarding facilities and will become part of our boarding family. In the evenings they will mix with all long-term boarders playing games, cooking, doing homework, after-school activities, and learning about British culture.  Students will also be part of the regular, fun outings every weekend, including visits to other cities, historical places of interest or a fun day out such as bowling, adventure park, etc.

Our boarding supervisors are friendly and always there to help our students with any of their needs. They can help advise on transport to and fro from airports, help with any dietary needs or medical conditions or just be a person to talk to. You can contact them via a boarding phone or email to communicate anything to do with your child.

The Six-Month programme starts each January and September. The 2024 start dates are 3rd January and 2nd September. The programmes will finish on 19th July 2024 and 9th February 2025 respectively.

*Students on the boarding programme will remain at school during the shorter one-week holidays and partake in activities with the boarders. During the two-week holidays in April and December, the school is closed and all boarding students return home to visit their parents.

One Month Taster Programme

In addition to our six-month programme we run a one month programme for individual students who would like to experience the school before deciding to come long-term.

Students will be integrated with their school year group and attend Information Technology (IT), Art, Drama, Sports and Music in addition to their English classes. This enables them to practise English every day and make many new friends.

Students will be part of our existing Boarding House and attend any evening and all weekend outings with our existing boarders. Our on-site boarding house welcomes children from the UK and all countries, nationalities and languages. Children enjoy this very much and generally want to come back as full-time students.

The one month programme runs all year during term time. Please contact the Admissions Team for availability.

School Bookings

We encourage International Schools to attend EAL classes where friends and siblings can enjoy and learn about British culture. We also offer a free place to an accompanying teacher who assists the group (minimum of 10 students). School bookings are for children from 11 to 17 years and are boarding only.

Agents

We work with agents regularly to book individual students and groups for our Long and Short Term English programs. Commissions are given, please contact us to find out more.
